What Is the FMGE Exam in India?

Any Indian citizen or overseas citizen who is in possession of a primary medical qualification that has been awarded by an overseas medical institution and who would like to obtain either provisional or permanent registration with the Medical Council of India or any State Medical council will have to take and pass the Foreign Medical Graduates Exam (FMGE) before being allowed to practice any form of medicine or surgery anywhere in the country.
Taking a Closer Look
Each year, the FMGE Exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) that is conducted online in two separate sessions. Candidates have to be present to take and pass both parts of the examination in order to be allowed to practice medicine within India. Content in the exam is based on the syllabus that has been developed by Graduate Medical Education Regulations in conjunction with approval from the Medical Council of India. Students are given 5 hours to complete both sections of the exam - 2.5 hours for each section and both sections are written on the same day. There is a 15 minute tutorial that takes place before the exam starts as well.
A Multiple Choice Exam Program
Before starting the test, all students will be required to accept a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to prevent them from sharing information with others who have not yet taken the exam. Each session will consist of 150 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) that have to be answered and the exam is only conducted in English. No negative marking takes place when the exam results are being assessed. Students will need to obtain at least 150 correct answers out of the possible 300 in order to pass this exam and they are allowed to take the examination as many times as they wish in an effort to pass. However, they will need to pay to register before being allowed to write each time.
Subjects that are Tested Each Year
The syllabus for the FMGE Exam will consist of a range of subjects, all of which students can expect to be tested on. Pre and para clinical subjects covered in the exam will include physiology, anatomy, pathology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, microbiology and biochemistry. Clinical subjects that students will be tested on include medicine, psychiatry, radiotherapy and dermatology & STD. General Surgery subjects in the exam will include general surgery itself, pediatrics, orthopedics, anesthesiology, radio diagnosis, obstetrics, gynecology, otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology. As a result, students need to ensure that they have covered all sections of their studies very well.
The FMGE Exam is conducted at a range of selected test centers throughout 27 cities in India, which means that it is extremely convenient for students to take the exam where it will be most convenient for them. As this is an intense examination, students should ensure that they put in as much preparation as possible beforehand.
